Dr. Mark Schwartz has spent more than 30 years studying human intimacy. Interning at the famed Masters and Johnson’s Institute right out of college, Dr. Schwartz went on to become the leading director of the Institute until it closed in the late ’90s, having worked closely for years with William H. Masters and Virginia E. Johnson. Masters and Johnson pioneered research into the structure of human sexual response and the diagnosis and treatment of human sexual and intimacy disorders and dysfunctions.
Dr. Schwartz’ personal passion for human relationships and the disorders that get in the way of our ability to love one another and experience deep intimacy and connection is the driving passion behind his 30+ years as a researcher, therapist, counselor, and expert in the field. Having been featured in countless television programs and magazines, and having lectured worldwide to both practitioners and the public at large, Dr. Schwartz is now based in Monterey, California where he manages his own private practice at Marriage Therapy Institute, hosts Marriage “Vacation” Retreats for Marriages in Crisis, and has just opened his new transitional living center for those recovering once and for all from addiction at Harmony Place Monterey.
Masters and Johnson worked with couples in a two-week or 10-day intensive format and were able to transform very troubled relationships. Changes were maintained in two year follow-ups. With the focus on sex therapy, some of the magic of their marital therapy has been lost over the years. Dr. Schwartz, who was on their staff and directed their workshop programs and became Executive Director of the Institute, will discuss some of the components of short-term directive relational therapy.
Dr. Mark Schwartz directs the Marriage Therapy Institute with Co-Therapist, Lori Galperin, MSW, in Monterey, California and specializes in working with couples who visit for a week of Intensive Couples Therapy. Therapy consists of two 90-minute sessions daily with homework. In one session, couples typically work on their relationship, and in the second, individual work is done with the partner present.
