Paraphilia

Paraphilia is sexual arousal that occurs in response to an unusual or atypical source of sexual stimulation. This may include items such as leather, the act of being tied-up/restrained, the experience of being hurt by various sorts of objects such as shoes, for example.

Sometimes the various forms of arousal are not a problem. However, when these arousal needs interfere with intimacy and closeness with another person, or substitutes for contact with another person, it requires intervention. In such cases, it usually represents an intimacy disorder. Treatment for the intimacy disorder is an important step in working to alleviate the blocks to closeness and intimacy.
